Robert Frost (1874–1963). Mountain Interval. 1920.

1. The Road Not Taken

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same, 10

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back. 15

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. 20

Beyonce in Seoul

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Sasha Fierce she was. Beyonce completely rocked the stage at Olympic Stadium last week with her Seoul leg of her “I AM… Sasha Fierce” tour. The Seoulite’s good friend got us free passes and since it was just Tuesday… on we went.

First off we had to have dinner. So we went to the Family Mart convenience store in the park and ate ramen and boiled eggs! It was The Seoulite’s first time eating ramen while standing inside the store next to the instant coffees. Yummy yummy yummy. Maybe I was too excited about Beyonce to notice that I was getting instantly fat from the ramen.

Unfortunately it wasn't like this.

Unfortunately it wasn't like this.

It was more like this.

It was more like this.

I did a little research online before going to the concert. Being out of the states keeps The Seoulite at an arm’s distance from the latest music trends. Sasha said this concert and album represented her need to ‘grow artistically’. How many times have we heard that from pop princesses while the true artists will be discovered long after we’re dead? So I thought it would be an adequate evening to see some American-sized smoke and mirrors with some catchy music.

But BAM! Check out this opening y’all! Never seen something this cool in my life.

By the way f(x) who were supposed to open for Beyonce was a no show. According to sources there was a miscommunication between Beyonce’s concert promoter B4H and the artist herself.

Well, if the diva cancels the opening act, she better be getting herself ready to deliver! And that was the biggest surprise to The Seoulite. In an era of so much mediocrity, Beyonce’s performance was 110% of her magical spirit. So much beauty, humanity and grace flowed right from all those booty shakin’ moves right to the audience. She’s the real deal.

The Seoulite’s personal favorite: Irreplaceable

She be singing Happy Birthday to everyone too!

Tribute to Michael Jackson:

And one more tribute:

Oooh what a tease:

People were crying. Getting ugly-faced with their passion. All because they saw a light so bright and more beautiful than anything they’ve seen before. Really, it was that great.

Note: These are not The Seoulite’s videos. So please don’t attribute those cheesy comments in the background to him! He was making an even bigger fool of himself dancing to Single Ladies!

One note about the concert promoters. They put the venue as ‘Olympic Gym’ on the wristbands. This is the Olympic STADIUM. The 1988 OLYMPICS were held here for cryin’ out loud. It ain’t no high school gym. No wonder they messed up the opening act by f(x)!

President Lee’s New Year Message

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Good speech. Good plan. But President Lee Myung Bak… please call Tony Robbins for a Personal Power session and get your mojo back!

Even President Bill Clinton has gotten counseling from the master of inspiration!

The President has some lofty goals to go into ‘crisis mode’ to dodge the economic crisis, take care of the poor, and reposition Korea emerge ahead after the smoke clears. But he needs some of that old charisma and confidence he had before his travails in 2008. I hope he has someone like Tony Robbins on his special ‘hotline‘ for 2009!

Meditating: New Year’s Resolutions

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

2009.
According to the general zeitgeist, we’re about to get a slap in the butt this year… like wave after wave of overdue punishment. So the Seoulite is making New Year’s resolutions a bit more carefully… and with more thought. This requires some major meditation and prayer. But how does one go about it? Below is an excerpt from a mediation blog. Does it work? Let us know!

How To Meditate Mindfully:Just Watch

Acceptance

Meditation is not striving to get somewhere in the way we we usually do with most activities. In fact trying to be more relaxed, or to achieve a certain state with meditation, is likely to be counter-productive. Meditation is best practiced by letting go, with an attitude of patience, trust and acceptance of the present moment.

Ekhart Tolle in his book “NOW” says, ”Surrender (acceptance) is the simple but profound wisdom of yielding rather than opposing the flow of life. The only place you can experience the flow of life is now, so to surrender is to accept the present moment unconditionally and without reservation”.

So important elements of meditation include patience, acceptance, non striving and letting go. All these attitudes are to do with not pushing or trying too hard, fully being with this moment not trying to change it, whether it is pleasant or unpleasant.

Acceptance can be practiced during meditation, by observing physical sensations, thoughts and emotions. Pain and discomfort for example can be an opportunity to practice. When sitting the usual tendency for most of us is to shift position if the slightest discomfort arises, trying to achieve a more comfortable, more pleasant position, and stop the unwanted sensations.

It may be worthwhile trying not to move at the first sign of discomfort, but if possible just observing the sensations, accepting them for what they are. Accepting, surrendering to discomfort may improve it, as pain is often made worse by our anxious and tense reactions to it. Of course sometimes you do need to move during a meditation, the best way to judge when is probably simply to be mindful of what your body is telling you.

When we sit and look at the mind thoughts and emotions stream past. Perhaps surprisingly this seems to be the normal state for our minds. Some thoughts are pleasant, some unpleasant or painful, often dwelling on the past or looking hopefully, or anxiously to the future. As with physical discomfort the natural tendency is to retreat from anything unpleasant, to push these experiences away or suppress them (in which case they may reappear later as physical symptoms).

Here again the suggestion is to try to accept, to surrender, be with whatever comes up. To try to view thoughts and emotions with a detached interest, with equanimity. This process can be helped sometimes by visualisation. For example when you sit to meditate imagine your mind as a vast open blue sky, and any thoughts and emotions that arise as clouds drifting by. Realize that they’re in the sky (the larger mind) but not affecting it. Watch them pass by and disappear.

As Ekhart Tolle says , surrendering to whatever is present now, somehow changes it, and reduces its power over you.

Update on Beard Papa

Monday, December 15th, 2008

A few weeks ago the Seoulite noticed construction on Beard Papa… a cream pufferie famous for high quality vanilla cream in the puffs. Here is confirmation that it is indeed open and that the puffs are delicious as ever.

With incredible will power it is possible to split one cream puff between two people.

There are two types of cream. Regular or yogurt. Yogurt! I bet it tastes like Pinkberry / Red Mango in a crispy pastry. We'll see next year.

The filling is incredibly fresh and cool to the tongue. I still think it’s baked better in San Francisco though. There is something different about the consistency of the flour and sugar here in Korea. Or maybe, no most likely… it’s the difference in the cow butter. American cows are so buttery!

To get to Beard Papa’s, go to Yangjae Station off of Line 3. Go up and down the stairs to find which exit is the right one. You need the exercise if you eat this. Or if you’re thin as a rail, it’s exit #6.

Seoulite Religion at Home

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

Seoulites are busy. But skipping religious activities create this ungrounded feeling… especially in a fast-paced city such as Seoul. Can’t we do something at home? To assuage his feelings, the Seoulite studied a passage from the Book of Isaiah. Who is Isaiah? The Onnuri minister said that the Book of Isaiah is like a mini bible within the good book because of its thoroughness and symmetry. It’s the fire and brimstone part of the bible. No need for scary movies after reading this.

Isaiah was an 8th-century BC Judean prophet who declared that all the world belonged to God and that God will destroy it. Isaiah therefore warns the people of the world to turn back to God. Oy vey, you can certainly feel it these days.

Isaiah Chapter 5 - The Song of the Vineyard. I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard in a fertile hillside.

He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit.

Now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will take away its hedge, and it will be eaten up. I will break down its wall of it, and it will be trampled down. I will lay it a wasteland. It won't be pruned nor hoed, But it will grow briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain on it. For the vineyard of Yahweh of Hosts is the house of Israel, And the men of Judah his pleasant plant: And he looked for justice, but, behold, oppression; For righteousness, but, behold, a cry of distress.

Woe to those who join house to house, Who lay field to field, until there is no room, And you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land! In my ears, Yahweh of Hosts says: Surely many houses will be desolate, Even great and beautiful, unoccupied. For ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, And a homer of seed shall yield an ephah.

Woe to those who rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; Who stay late into the night, until wine inflames them! The harp, lyre, tambourine, and flute, with wine, are at their feasts; But they don't regard the work of Yahweh, Neither have they considered the operation of his hands. Therefore my people have go into captivity for lack of knowledge; Their honorable men are famished, And their multitudes are parched with thirst. So man is brought low, Mankind is humbled, And the eyes of the arrogant ones are humbled; But Yahweh of Hosts is exalted in justice, And God the Holy One is sanctified in righteousness.

Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, And prudent in their own sight! Woe to those who are mighty to drink wine, And champions at mixing strong drink; Who acquit the guilty for a bribe, But deny justice for the innocent!

Therefore Yahweh's anger burns against his people, And he has stretched out his hand against them, and has struck them. The mountains tremble, And their dead bodies are as refuse in the midst of the streets. For all this, his anger is not turned away, But his hand is still stretched out. He will lift up a banner to the nations from far, And he will whistle for them from the end of the earth. Behold, they will come speedily and swiftly. None shall be weary nor stumble among them; None shall slumber nor sleep; Neither shall the belt of their loins be untied, Nor the latchet of their shoes be broken: Whose arrows are sharp, And all their bows bent. Their horses' hoofs will be like flint, And their wheels like a whirlwind. Their roaring will be like a lioness. They will roar like young lions. Yes, they shall roar, And seize their prey and carry it off, And there will be no one to deliver. They will roar against them in that day like the roaring of the sea. If one looks to the land, behold, darkness and distress. The light is darkened in its clouds.

Lily Allen - New Music Video - The Fear

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Lily Allen. UK singer and tabloid sensation. She’s gotten into trouble lately, but her music has always been deep and insightful. Her new song is a warning message - one that can benefit many Seoulites who are still green to capitalism.

It certainly is a fearful time for the economy these days. With world’s top two economies (the US and Japan) predicted to be in the negative growth territory in 2009, the effects are expected to be tremendous. Depending on whose analysis you believe, South Korea’s economy is expected to GROW 2-4% next year. Though it’s less than the desired 5% earlier forecast - way before this current paranoid period - it’s still growth. And a pretty commendable growth rate at that.

However, Seoulites should still fear. Not for decreased spending power or a weakened local currency. But the fact that continued economic growth can create complacent conditions to miss this opportunity to learn a lesson - the dark psychological side of capitalism. Most of the world will be forced to adopt the new era of ‘frugality’ because of increased unemployment, decreased asset values and tightening of credit markets.

But for Koreans who are still hungry to fully engage in the capitalist lifestyle, they may continue on to the path that led to the current ruin of America and many ‘Western’ countries. Turn on most movies on SK video on demand and you will see old American movies - many from the 1950s-1970s - that focus on the trap of materialism. You know those Twilight Zone-type situations where people believe in the ‘American Dream’ and find themselves in a nightmare where they’ve sacrificed their relations with other people and their personal happiness? It’s being shown in contemporary Korean movies too - people not being able to deal with the hidden cost of capitalism… that not everybody wins.

Following down the path that is ‘approved’ by capitalist society can lead to disastrous consequences for those not equipped to handle failure. Korea now is like the America of the 1960s. People drunk on the illusion of ’success’ - a little naive and inexperienced to the full scope of converting from an agrarian to manufacturing to service economy in such a short period of time. Koreans have leapfrogged in terms of economic development and infrastructure. The Seoulite hopes they will leapfrog with the Korean spirit through some of the half-truths floating around in the ‘free’ market. Capitalism seems to work well only when everyone understands both its dangers and its benefits.

What illustrates what I’m talking about? This commercial. This type of character. This vision of the ‘Korea’ now in style that is so 느끼해 - or greasy. People beware! Apparently this actress is the quintessential beauty for women in their 50s. But according to a friend of mine, she was a mistress of Chun Doo Hwan, Korea’s former President/Dictator and lied about her education credentials. Sounds exactly like a lady I know that looks the same as she does! Catch him on a day like today and the Seoulite just calls it like he sees it.

And this one… keeping up with the Kims.

Get Your Church On - Onnuri English Ministry

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Where do hip Seoulites get together to worship the Lord? It’s called Onnuri Church and this would count as a megachurch - a sprawling complex of buildings located in Yangjae and Seobingo. The main campus is at Yangjae with both Korean and English services. English services start at 11:30AM at Yangjae (south of the river) and 4:00PM at Seobingo (north of the river).

There are often guests speakers, which adds a lot of valuable insight from different perspectives. And of course there’s the band and lots of singing. A Glide Memorial it isn’t, but nevertheless, Onnuri does do a good job in keeping their services lively. The Seoulite likes to go to the Onnuri English service in the morning before heading to the Buddhist temple in the afternoon. Just trying to spread the love in a double way - so don’t be hatin’. Be prayin’. Or chanting. The point is that there are so many spiritual resources with multi-lingual support here in Seoul.

The world is in a dire place right now and no matter how you become spiritual and connect with a higher being - please consider it.

What would Jesus do? My Aunt told me that the rise in the number of people praying has definitely helped Korea transform itself from a third world country to 13th in the world in the span of one generation. The power of prayer.

You got to hand it to them for the production value. Musicals, international lecturers, even a day care center. Though ahem... there is a baby always wailing during the English service. You know what I'm talking about... Is it rude or is it providing a channel for the voice from above? Let's give that an amen.

Here are some people singing. That's all the photos I wanted to take. For some reason taking photos during religious events feels like you're taking pictures of people without their clothes on. It's a very personal moment.

About

Hi, I’m Sean Lim, an American expat living in South Korea.  This is my blog about becoming a Seoulite.

What is a Seoulite?
A ‘Seoulite’ (서울깍쟁이) is a citizen of Seoul, just as a ‘New Yorker’ is a citizen of New York. Of course the label ‘Seoulite’ doesn’t simply denote a place of residence [...]
