Vote for Jonathan! The Best Job in the World!

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

What’s the best job in the world? Well, for some it would be getting paid $150,000 to take care of a portion of the Great Barrier Reef for six months. Ho-hum. Where’s the traffic, smog and constant fighting with people? The Seoulite would rather stay here to work his butt off and wash it all down with a nice glass of wine each night.

So… help my friend Jonathan Juweon Kim get the job of a lifetime, so that I can take his job. He kinda sorta promised. Anyhow, it’s a great application and he’s an awesome guy!

You can vote for him here: http://www.islandreefjob.com/#/shortlisted-applicants/watch/sE33o1dgstA

What’s the job description?

In between travelling to various islands of the Great Barrier Reef, the Island Caretaker will live at Blue Pearl, a beautiful three-bedroom home on Hamilton Island featuring stunning views of the Whitsunday Islands, modern facilities and exquisite furnishings.

The bright, airy interior features three spacious bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, state-of-the-art entertainment system, ceiling fans, air-conditioning and laundry facilities.

The Island Caretaker will enjoy Blue Pearl’s outdoor areas including a private plunge pool/spa with exceptional views, sun lounges, large balconies and the traditional Aussie barbeque. A golf buggy is also included with the house, so you can explore the island with ease.

Yeah, sounds real nice… but where can you get botox, a flu shot, facial and laser resurfacing under one hour all in one location? Mmmm-hmmm… didn’t think so.

Jonathan is currently #3 “y’all” - a throwback to his Texan heritage… though why do you hide your LA roots Jonathan?)…. So vote vote vote and hopefully he will be on the island… like Jin and Sun from LOST.

You can see the rankings here: http://www.islandreefjob.com/#/most-votes

The site is in numerous languages. So read in Korean, English, French, German, Chinese and others!

Okay, so it does look like heaven. Wow!

First Broadcast of 2009

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

My first world news broadcast of the year at Arirang started with some good news… increased Iraqi sovereignty. Perhaps it will hasten the departure of US troops and tax dollars. You know if Koreans were rebuilding Iraq it would be done by the end of this month… with a Samsung flat-screen tv in every living room. Let’s hope for peace in 2009. It actually doesn’t seem like an empty platitude to say that these days… more like a desperate plea!

Ebishura - Seafood Buffet in Apgujeong

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

What does an enterprising Seoulite do with a former hof not fulfilling its potential in an amazing location off of Apgujeong Station exit #2? Build a multi-thousand square foot seafood buffet of course! If you want a step above Todai… head for Ebishura.

The best way to impress diners is to display rows upon rows of empty wine bottles.

The Seoulite’s Day Job

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

This blog has got me occupied, but don’t worry, the Seoulite won’t quit his day job. It starts at the crack of dawn anyhow. If you’re curious, here’s a peek of what I’ve been up to lately at Arirang TV as the new World News Correspondent. Whoever said studying drama and international relations don’t go hand in hand? It’s like a dream come true!

Arirang TV and Arirang Radio is like the PBS and NPR of Korea... so there's a strong public service element to the programming. But that doesn't stop us from playing K-pop!

Here's the company's message straight from the website... As Korea's premier English-language network, Arirang broadcasts three channels: Arirang World, Arirang Korea and Arirang Arab. Arirang TV is viewed in 62,600,000 households in more than 188 countries.

Daily Dose of Juice

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

What is one of the top 10 reasons to be a Seoulite? Nutrient-packed juice delivered to your office every morning. It’s called Nok-Jeup (녹즙) and it comes in all sorts of varieties. From your easy to drink fruit cocktail or pomegranate to your exotic flavors like kale or black garlic. All are squeezed fresh at the crack of dawn at some farm right outside the city and then distributed by 9AM throughout Seoul. The price is pretty good - around 1 dollar per pouch - much less than coffee, while much more beneficial to your health.

Kale Juice. Kale is very high in calcium and makes an excellent calcium alternative. Traditionally Used For: Anemia, Asthma, Arthritis, Circulation, Eye Problems, Hair Loss, Hay Fever, Impotence, Liver, Skin Problems, Ulcers, Weight Loss

Where to order? There are several companies. The big conglomerate is Pulmuone. But I don’t think the quality is as fresh as the smaller company I go with. It’s called Sae Beok Nok Jeup - literally meaning ‘dawn juice’. Here’s the website: http://www.saebeok.co.kr.

About

Hi, I’m Sean Lim, an American expat living in South Korea.  This is my blog about becoming a Seoulite.

What is a Seoulite?
A ‘Seoulite’ (서울깍쟁이) is a citizen of Seoul, just as a ‘New Yorker’ is a citizen of New York. Of course the label ‘Seoulite’ doesn’t simply denote a place of residence [...]
